Bristol Airport Overview
Bristol Airport was opened in 1930 by Prince George, son of King George V. 935 passengers traveled through the airport in its first year, compared with more than 6 million passengers in 2008. Further expansion of the airport is planned which will increase these figures yet further.
The airport is situated at Lulsgate Bottom in North Somerset, some 8 miles south of the City of Bristol. It can be reached from either junction 18 or 22 of the M5 motorway, although it is still a good 15 to 20 minute drive from either junction, so time must be allowed for this part of the journey. Shuttle buses run from Bristol Temple Meads train station to the airport, which have a journey time of approximately 30 minutes.
Local comedian Justin Lee Collins recently recorded a tannoy announcement at the airport which passengers will hear upon arrival at the terminal, saying simply “Welcome to Bristol Airport, please mind the stairs”.
