Formerly known as Speke Airport, the facility was renamed during 2002 in honour of John Lennon, the famous Beatles musician from Liverpool. As one of the oldest airports in the U.K., beginning in 1930 commercial flights were regularly scheduled until the onset of WWII. At that time, the facility was used for the war and renamed RAF Speke.
