newquay airportNewquay Cornwall Airport lies in the north region of Cornwall, 4.8 km north-east of the city of Newquay. The site has recently been acquired for commercial flights after belonging for many years to the RAF St. Mawgan and was heavily used by the U.S. Air Force as a strategic nuclear bomber base. The large runway was designed for military aircraft and can now handle jumbo jet civilian air traffic. Redevelopment of the terminal building and exterior gates has allowed the airport to expand making it one of the fastest growing facilities in the U.K. that may handle a projected capacity of 700,000 travellers. Newquay Cornwall serves residents and visitors travelling primarily to destinations in the U.K. Air carriers Air Southwest and Flybe provide the majority of service to approximately 400,000 passengers using the site each year.
